A bolt-on hybrid system that could double fuel mileage in a full-size truck drew some of the largest and most curious crowds around a single vehicle at this past SEMA Show.
Showcased in a ’57 Pontiac Chieftan, the 6.0-liter LS engine was assisted by an E-Charger system developed by Johnathan Goodwin, a well-known figure in the green automotive movement who has handled conversion projects for entertainment stars like Neil Young and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Prominently protruding above the Vortec manifold was a 50 kW AC motor turned by a supercharger pulley and Gilmer belt drive. Walk around to where the truck lid was open and there was a battery charger and 35 lithium-ion battery cells.
“I had people tell me that I build cars for famous people, but what can you do for me,” says Goodwin.
The system Goodwin developed has just three components: motor, controller and battery pack, along with the necessary wiring. Immediate goals include working with suppliers to get costs down and design bolt-on kits for popular applications that traditionally struggle with fuel economy — and that vehicle segment is usually driven by full-size trucks and SUVs. Not only do they have the worst gas mileage — aside from a few supercars — but they have the real estate under the hood to support the motor and the GVWR to handle the extra 220 pounds of batteries.
The motor is connected to the crankshaft via 1:1 belt drive and provides up to 150 lb-ft additional torque. It’s also regen capable, so during braking or off-throttle events the motor turns into a generator and puts energy into the batteries where it can be used later during acceleration.
“Which is your biggest cost factor when driving a vehicle,” adds Goodwin.

Why not have your cake and eat it too? The late, great comedian George Carlin puzzled over this expression, wondering why can’t you eat the cake that you already have. No matter, as he never experienced the new E-Charger system, which boosts engine output while maintaining, or even improving fuel efficiency, and lowering emissions.
According to inventor Johnathan Goodwin, this setup can increase power by up to 150 lb-ft of torque without sacrificing fuel economy. And according to SEMA smog testing, the installation proved a staggering 47 percent decrease at the tailpipe. He says the technology is able to mount onto any engine application (either gas or diesel), allowing every vehicle owner to enjoy the benefits of guilt-free performance. That is, enhancing your driving experience without adding pollution or fuel consumption.
How does the system combine all these normally contradictory elements? The E-Charger system was a byproduct of a build that Johnathan did back in 2007 for musician Neil Young, converting his car to a series hybrid electric. From there, Johnathan developed a simple method for bolting on hybrid capabilities without having to buy a hybrid car. The system Johnathan developed has just three components: motor, controller and battery pack, along with the necessary wiring.
The E-Charger applies stored energy via an electric motor to assist either an internal combustion or a compression-ignition (diesel) engine when extra power is needed. The electric motor is connected to the crankshaft via 1:1 cog-belt drive, taking load off the engine, thus scavenging power and lessening emissions.
Included with the system is a 10 kW lithium-ion phosphate battery pack that can be replenished by regenerative charging. During braking or off-throttle events, the motor turns into a generator and puts energy into the batteries where it can be used later during acceleration. In addition, the system has a 3 kW battery charger that can be plugged into a household outlet or a standard EV charging station.
It all sounds great in theory, but we haven’t yet had a chance to drive a vehicle equipped with the E-Charger, so stay tuned for some firsthand impressions of this new upgrade.
The world of hybrid technology has made massive leaps over the past decade or so. Once a mere afterthought in the actual production arena, there are thousands of hybrid vehicles sold in the US each year, and with a huge push for everybody to be “greener”, those numbers are only going to continue to climb.
As technology has advanced, some companies have designed bolt-on hybrid system that allow the environmentally conscious among the gearhead community to install a hybrid system that not only increases fuel economy but also boosts torque and horsepower!
The E-Charger Hybrid system doesn’t work like a typical supercharger that requires power from the crankshaft to spin up and pump air into the engine. Instead, the electric motor is bolted on and actually applies force to the crankshaft, helping the engine spin more easily.
The system adds up to 150 ft/lbs or torque with zero parasitic loss, though there are about 200 pounds of batteries used to power the electric motor.
Additionally the system provides a big bump in fuel economy, and uses regenerative braking to charge the batteries once their initial charge has been depleted.
This is definitely an innovative design that we expect to see on more and more builds with the multiple benefits of increased power and fuel economy with the only drawback being a little added weight for the batteries.
The E-Charger is undoubtedly one of the most unique electric hybrid systems we’ve seen so far. Nowadays, electric cars have become more and more popular in daily transportation and as they perfect the vehicles, it is not very hard to see the reason why.
Yet, some people are simply not that happy with this technology or prefer to stay true to their roots and keep their traditional internal combustion engines.
This time, we take a closer look at an innovative power-adding system which is designed to transform a standard combustion engine into a hybrid one equipped with an add-on assembly that has the potential to skyrocket the car’s efficiency.
This is a new and revolutionary bolt-on technology that gives more power to the engine without any emissions or sacrificing fuel economy. This system applies stored energy via the electric motor to help the internal combustion when more power is needed.
The guys at the YouTube channel FullBoost did an interview with Johnathan Goodwin from the company at this year’s edition of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, to get some answers from him and a demonstration on how their ‘electronic supercharger’ actually works.
In the video we get to see a specific application of the E-Charger, where an LSX engine is aided in making more power. Essentially, the E-Charger hybrid system takes a load off of the engine so now the engine works less hard which provides the car better fuel economy in the long run. Sounds cool to you?
What do you think of this cool innovative technology? Maybe the E-Charger would change the process of power increase as we know it. Do you believe the time has come to switch everything in the world of cars to electricity-based technology and solutions?
Check out the E-Charger hybrid system in the following video and let us know what you think of its application. Would you yourself try the E-Charger in your car? If everything works out well, the E-Charger could turn out to be a very promising piece of technology.
